We’ve been all over the ins and outs of HP’s planned acquisition of Palm—the tablets, the phones, the bright promise of a cloud services company buying a cloud client, the grim prospect of one failed smartphone maker buying another—but for all that Palm will supposedly do for HP, the one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is the idea that webOS will go into a printer. At least, not until HP’s quarterly earnings call, where HP’s Mark Hurd said:

I think in this case of Palm, and our planned acquisition of Palm, it really has more to do with the intellectual property and the fact that when you look across the HP ecosystem of interconnected devices, it is a large family of devices. When we think of printers, you’ve now got a whole series of web-connected printers that, as they connect to the web, need an OS. We prefer to have that OS in our case to be our IP, where we can control the customer experience as we always have in the printing business, and that’s a big deal to us.

In other words, webOS gives HP its own lightweight, Web-savvy client operating system for all of its consumer-facing gadgetry up through netbooks. For anything that cries out for a touch-based OS—as opposed to a stylus- or mouse-based OS—HP now has webOS as an in-house option. One wonders what’s next: Calculators? Digital cameras? (Actually, a digital camera would certainly be a candidate for the webOS treatment.)

Hurd also reiterated the obvious point that HP is indeed planning a webOS-based tablet. Of course it is—the only question is whether said tablet will be based on ARM, x86, or both. And if it’s based on x86, will it dual-boot Windows?

When discussing tablets, Hurd went out of his way to emphasize that HP isn’t necessarily abandoning a Windows tablet. “Microsoft is probably one of the best relationships we’ve got in our company, and they’re still extremely important,” Hurd said.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Hewlett-Packard said on Wednesday that its quarterly profit increased 25 percent in part because of cost-cutting and a stronger showing from its personal computer division.

Revenue was up in most of the technology company’s major divisions, and it raised its 2010 outlook, citing “accelerating market momentum.”

The results showed that technology spending by corporations was coming back to life. Hewlett is considered a bellwether because it is the world’s biggest maker of PCs and printers. And its latest results are the first from a major technology company to include the full month of January.

Net income was $2.3 billion, or 96 cents a share, compared with $1.9 billion, or 75 cents a share, a year ago.

Excluding items, income was $1.10 a share. That beat the average estimate of $1.06 a share. Revenue jumped 8 percent, to $31.2 billion, exceeding analyst forecasts for $30 billion.

The services division stumbled, however. Revenue fell 1 percent even as the division got more profitable, a difference most likely explained by aggressive cost cuts to that business. Services represent H.P.’s latest challenge against I.B.M. and are a cornerstone of a major makeover for H.P.

H.P.’s 2010 forecast now calls for $121.5 billion to $122.5 billion in revenue, exceeding the $120 billion analysts were expecting.

Net income is expected to be $3.79 to $3.86 a share, or $4.37 to $4.44 a share excluding charges. Analysts had been expecting $4.37 a share, excluding charges.

In the last quarter, the PC division posted its first revenue increase in over a year, rising 20 percent, to $10.6 billion. Operating profit was up 22 percent.

One reason could be an early lift from the introduction of new computers loaded with Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating software. Many corporations, however, are still expected to delay their purchases of PCs with Windows 7.

Last month, Stacy J. Smith, chief financial officer of Intel, said big companies still needed time to test how the new software interacted with their internal applications. Intel supplies 80 percent of the microprocessors that power modern PCs and computer servers.

Already, new chips from Intel are helping to increase server sales, which slumped as corporate and government technology budgets shrank. H.P.’s server division reported an 11 percent revenue jump Wednesday.

H.P.’s shares rose 68 cents, or 1.38 percent, to $50.12 in regular trading.
