FLOGGER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK HP seems to have figured out a novel way of extracting the maximum amount of money from punters who have been unfortunate enough to buy one of its printers.

Not content with overcharging for ink, the printer manufacturer apparently regionalises its print cartridges, as one user found out. The unfortunate soul in question, Michelle Sullivan, bought an HP Photosmart C7180 printer Down Under but found that when she moved to Malta she was unable to purchase compatible print cartridges.

The problem wasn’t due to anything as innocent as regional unavailability, but rather it was down to HP’s decision to create specific cartridges for different regions for the same printer.

The surprised and shocked Ms Sullivan went to great lengths to find out whether this apparent HP policy was actually true. After questioning the main dealer for HP in Malta, who told her that ink cartridges were regionalised, Sullivan then had a chat with a HP online support agent.

Unsurprisingly the response she received was less than helpful, with the agent suggesting that Sullivan try Bestbuy or Walmart, not realising that neither of these retailers has stores in Malta.

HP has in the past put some rather money-grubbing restrictions on its printing products. A number of its toner cartridges had page count chips that would stop the printer after a certain number of pages had been printed, regardless of whether there was still toner left in the cartridge. For the benefit of punters’ wallets and the environment, a cottage industry flogging ‘blank’ page counting chips successfully grew out of HP’s corporate greed.

This sorry saga has left Ms Sullivan with a six-month old printer that is effectively useless simply because she decided to move. If you’ve had similar issues with HP’s cartridge restrictions we’d love to hear them.At press time HP has yet to respond to our questions on this matter.

Tired of hearing customers whine that printer ink is too expensive–and facing competition from ink-cartridge refillers–executives at Hewlett-Packard’s printing division would like to buff up the print giant’s reputation with consumers. So the company recently sent Thom Brown, who specializes in “competitive media intelligence,” on a media tour with a presentation called “Why Does Ink Cost So Much?” Opening a bag of props including a trio of shot glasses, squares of foam and some disassembled print heads, Mr. Brown earlier this week explained the complex workings of H-P print heads, and the billions of dollars the company has spent over the years developing them.He talked about the challenges in shooting drops of ink at moving pages of paper, and the perils of refilling ink cartridges rather than buying new ones from H-P. Refilling involves poking a hole in an H-P cartridge and filling it with a god-knows-what mixture of non-H-P ink–a process that can lead to smudging and other poor performance, Mr. Brown said. H-P, he added, has heard from plenty of customers who tried refilling. “A lot of them don’t have good experiences,” he said.

In addition to research-and-development, the expense of ink cartridges comes from H-P’s high-tech testing of cartridges that break. The company uses electron microscopes, Mr. Brown said, to figure out what made a printhead malfunction. H-P has started what it calls an “Ink Amnesty Program” to bring back customers who have left H-P for refillers. In exchange for sharing your bad-ink story, the program will give consumers a 20% discount coupon for H-P ink.Of course it’s not just R&D that makes H-P’s ink costs so much. With more than 40% of the worldwide printer market last year, according to research firm IDC, H-P doesn’t face serious competitive pressure that would force it to drop prices.

Mr. Brown said his area of knowledge is printing technology, not profits.
But in the company’s last quarterly earnings report, H-P’s printing division booked more than $6 billion in sales and more than $1 billion in operating profit. Its operating profit margin was 17%, but Shaw Wu, an analyst with Kaufman Brothers, said that includes sales of low-profit printers. On ink alone, he estimates that H-P’s margin is somewhere between 20% and 30%.

When you set out to refill your own printer ink cartridges, you are essentially doing so in order to find a much cheaper way to keep your printer functioning. Once you start refilling your printer ink cartridges, you will no longer need to pay the hefty price of purchasing a new printer ink cartridge every time that yours runs out. The act of refilling printer ink cartridges can be a delicate one but as long as you work slowly and pay attention to what you are doing, you should be able to manage it without any problems. There are a few things that you should keep in mind before you start refilling your own printer ink cartridges, however.

The printer ink cartridges that your printer uses will be able to be refilled if the print head is located directly on the printer ink cartridge. Otherwise, you may not be able to refill your printer ink cartridges. You will also need to make sure that you use the cartridge within a few days after you refill it, just to make sure that everything is moving properly throughout the printer ink cartridge. That will also help your printer to adjust to the manually refilled printer ink cartridge. You’ll also want to be careful to find ink which is going to be compatible with your printer ink cartridge so that you don’t risk damaging the printer ink cartridge while refilling. If you do all of these things, however, you can easily take advantage of your own refills and save a great deal of money while doing so.

When you reuse your printer ink cartridges, you’ll be using the same casing over and over again to house the printer ink that you print with. This means that a great deal of ink is going to be passing through the unit itself and as a result, some of that ink may start to dry on the print head and nozzle of the printer cartridges. Cleaning this dry printer ink out should be able to restore your printer ink cartridge to a fully functional state once more. You will need to be very careful about how you do this, however, so that you do not damage the printer ink which you just put into your recycled printer ink cartridge.

Start by running the print head cleaning process on your printer itself. This can help to restore your printer itself to a clean state which is going to allow the best printing. If you find that you’re still having problems with getting your printer to work properly, there could be dry printer ink within the nozzle of your printer ink cartridges. Very carefully remove the nozzle from your printer ink cartridge and soak it in warm water. Thoroughly dry it on a paper towel before you reattach it to your printer ink cartridge. If you do this correctly, your refilled printer ink cartridge should quickly be able to work again and you will have a fully functional printer to use.

Refilling your printer ink cartridges is a quick and simple way to maximize the usability of the printers which you use. Instead of having to unnecessarily spend exorbitant amounts of money on buying new and expensive printer ink cartridges on a regular basis, you can follow some guided instructions and refill printer ink cartridges on your own, allowing you to use it over and over again. The only trick comes into play with the fact that printer ink cartridges can only be refilled a certain number of times before they stop working properly.

This means that you will always need to take care to count the number of times in which you actually refill a printer ink cartridge. If you expect to get the greatest amount of life out of your cartridges, you will want to always treat them very delicately. This will include remembering the number of times which you refill it. Refill your printer ink cartridge too often and you will damage the unit and waste ink. Some sources will recommend that you only refill a printer ink cartridge twice before disposing of it, while other people will tell you that you can successfully refill a printer ink cartridge up to 6 times before it needs to be disposed of. As long as you are always careful about what you are doing, you should be able to get a longer lifespan out of all of your cartridges.

You will want to consider performing your own printer ink cartridge refills when you decide that you need to start finding ways to cut back and start saving money with all of your regular expenditures. If you do a lot of printing, printer ink cartridge refills can be one of the most expensive things that you spend money on, which is why you will need to look into how refilling your own printer ink cartridges can be a smart idea. Although it is a very delicate process, it is one that will give you the best chance of saving a great deal of money over a long period of time.

There are a number of resources which you could turn to when you are looking for the best way to refill your own printer ink cartridges. There are plenty of websites online which can guide you through the process, some of which even provide video directions. Finding a website that provides video directions can be especially helpful as you will get step by step directions as to what you need to do. You could also turn to the brand manufacturer yourself for directions on how to refill the printer ink cartridges, although very often, you will find the brand will be more interested in selling you a new printer ink cartridge over helping you replace yours. With a little patience, however, you should be able to soon refill your printer ink cartridges and start saving money!

Refilling your HP inkjet cartridges is beneficial for the environment, especially in the present days of global worming. It not only cuts down on the amount of plastic waste, but also can help you to save a lot of money because you don’t have to spend even more money for another plastic inkjet cartridge. An original, HP inkjet cartridge, on the other hand, is far more expensive than the refills. So economically too, refilling inkjet cartridges is also profitable.

Moreover, a printer inkjet cartridge can be used several times. Printer Inkjet cartridge from companies like HP can get away with refilling it about 5 times before any issues might start while there are some companies, which claim their printer ink cartridge can be refilled 10, 12 or even 14 times. While flushing out your old printer ink cartridges, make sure that all traces of old ink are removed properly. This again cuts down on the risk of clogged print heads, which can ruin your printer. For this reason, many printer inkjet manufacturers offer printer ink cartridge cleaning kits along with the cartridge.

Another thing to consider while refilling your printer inkjet cartridge, is the mess. If you don’t refill it in a proper way, this process of refilling may give you enough reason to spend hours in cleaning your hands, the printer and the refilled printer ink cartridges only in order to avoid any long-term mess around your printer. Apart from the time and mess factors, refilling your printer inkjet cartridges may truly be beneficial.

Ink refilling is not an easy task. Even if you order remanufactured inks from online providers, there are still responsibilities you should undertake as the end user. It would be wise if you would gather pointers on the general tips on how to refill an ink cartridge.

The general tips contain very basic rules when it comes to printer cartridge refilling. These basic rules are those that you usually forget. You ignore them because you think you already know these essentials. But the truth is you know the rules half-heartedly and you think that the task is as easy as refilling your pitchers with water.

Tips on ink cartridge refilling – basic rules to consider

If you do not mind getting your clothes stained while you are refilling your empty cartridges, then the entire task will be easier. But if you want that stain in your clothing to be all worth it, you must be guided by some tips on how to fulfill the task on your own. Here’s how you may do the task successfully:

1.	Know that one cartridge is different from that of the other. There are no identical cartridges even for the same printer brands. This is because there are different models that are out in the market. Therefore, you must look into the type of printer you own and the series or model the product belongs to. In this way, you will not have any hassles ordering your ink refills online.

2.	Generally, there are two types of cartridges. You may say this is very simple. You know that there is a black cartridge and a colored cartridge. Well, besides knowing that, you have to take note that refilling black cartridges differ from refilling those that are colored.

Take for instance in Lexmark ink cartridge refilling. The black ink is refilled using the hole on top of the cartridge. Simply do that through the help of a needle. As for the colored ink cartridges, you have to determine what color to use after you have removed the caps on the cartridge. Make the necessary markings for each color type.

3.	There are two different methods by which you can refill ink cartridges. Lexmark ink refills make use of a sponge system while HP ink makes use of the ink reservoir. The sponge or the reservoir will be your guide when refilling the empty cartridge successfully.

4.	You should refill your cartridges slowly but surely. Do not attempt to fill your cartridge to the brim. This will cause not only spillage but damage to your printer. Most of the time 5 cubic centimeters of ink is already enough for one ink refill. Make sure that you do not refill your cartridges on a rush.

Above all these important tips, there is one thing you should always keep in mind while refilling an ink cartridge. It is important to keep the entire job as clean as possible. Any spillage on the cartridge should be wiped off accordingly. This will help you get the best out of your printing jobs later on. Do this if you do not want to damage your printer as well.
