Tired of hearing customers whine that printer ink is too expensive–and facing competition from ink-cartridge refillers–executives at Hewlett-Packard’s printing division would like to buff up the print giant’s reputation with consumers. So the company recently sent Thom Brown, who specializes in “competitive media intelligence,” on a media tour with a presentation called “Why Does Ink Cost So Much?” Opening a bag of props including a trio of shot glasses, squares of foam and some disassembled print heads, Mr. Brown earlier this week explained the complex workings of H-P print heads, and the billions of dollars the company has spent over the years developing them.He talked about the challenges in shooting drops of ink at moving pages of paper, and the perils of refilling ink cartridges rather than buying new ones from H-P. Refilling involves poking a hole in an H-P cartridge and filling it with a god-knows-what mixture of non-H-P ink–a process that can lead to smudging and other poor performance, Mr. Brown said. H-P, he added, has heard from plenty of customers who tried refilling. “A lot of them don’t have good experiences,” he said.

In addition to research-and-development, the expense of ink cartridges comes from H-P’s high-tech testing of cartridges that break. The company uses electron microscopes, Mr. Brown said, to figure out what made a printhead malfunction. H-P has started what it calls an “Ink Amnesty Program” to bring back customers who have left H-P for refillers. In exchange for sharing your bad-ink story, the program will give consumers a 20% discount coupon for H-P ink.Of course it’s not just R&D that makes H-P’s ink costs so much. With more than 40% of the worldwide printer market last year, according to research firm IDC, H-P doesn’t face serious competitive pressure that would force it to drop prices.

Mr. Brown said his area of knowledge is printing technology, not profits.
But in the company’s last quarterly earnings report, H-P’s printing division booked more than $6 billion in sales and more than $1 billion in operating profit. Its operating profit margin was 17%, but Shaw Wu, an analyst with Kaufman Brothers, said that includes sales of low-profit printers. On ink alone, he estimates that H-P’s margin is somewhere between 20% and 30%.

The entire idea of refilling your own printer ink cartridges revolves around the concept of saving money. By refraining from buying a new printer ink cartridge every time you run out, you already save a significant amount of money off the retail price of a new printer ink cartridge. It can be difficult, however, to find the greatest deals unless you start buying in bulk and you may wonder if, when you are trying to refill your own printer ink cartridges, you can purchase a large quantity of ink without it going bad. Many printer ink cartridges will dry up over time, so worrying about bulk ink going bad is a valid concern.

You will have absolutely no problems with buying your printer ink in bulk, as long as you always follow the proper storage directions given with the printer ink. When you want to take advantage of the fact that you are trying to save money, buying products at the lowest possible price per unit is an important factor. Buying a large quantity of printer ink will definitely cost less but you will need to make sure that printer ink will not go bad or dry up. Fortunately, the manufacturers of the printer ink realize and acknowledge this and they will usually provide bulk buyers will instructions on how to properly store your printer ink to ensure that none of it goes to waste.

When you set out to refill your own printer ink cartridges, you are essentially doing so in order to find a much cheaper way to keep your printer functioning. Once you start refilling your printer ink cartridges, you will no longer need to pay the hefty price of purchasing a new printer ink cartridge every time that yours runs out. The act of refilling printer ink cartridges can be a delicate one but as long as you work slowly and pay attention to what you are doing, you should be able to manage it without any problems. There are a few things that you should keep in mind before you start refilling your own printer ink cartridges, however.

The printer ink cartridges that your printer uses will be able to be refilled if the print head is located directly on the printer ink cartridge. Otherwise, you may not be able to refill your printer ink cartridges. You will also need to make sure that you use the cartridge within a few days after you refill it, just to make sure that everything is moving properly throughout the printer ink cartridge. That will also help your printer to adjust to the manually refilled printer ink cartridge. You’ll also want to be careful to find ink which is going to be compatible with your printer ink cartridge so that you don’t risk damaging the printer ink cartridge while refilling. If you do all of these things, however, you can easily take advantage of your own refills and save a great deal of money while doing so.

When you reuse your printer ink cartridges, you’ll be using the same casing over and over again to house the printer ink that you print with. This means that a great deal of ink is going to be passing through the unit itself and as a result, some of that ink may start to dry on the print head and nozzle of the printer cartridges. Cleaning this dry printer ink out should be able to restore your printer ink cartridge to a fully functional state once more. You will need to be very careful about how you do this, however, so that you do not damage the printer ink which you just put into your recycled printer ink cartridge.

Start by running the print head cleaning process on your printer itself. This can help to restore your printer itself to a clean state which is going to allow the best printing. If you find that you’re still having problems with getting your printer to work properly, there could be dry printer ink within the nozzle of your printer ink cartridges. Very carefully remove the nozzle from your printer ink cartridge and soak it in warm water. Thoroughly dry it on a paper towel before you reattach it to your printer ink cartridge. If you do this correctly, your refilled printer ink cartridge should quickly be able to work again and you will have a fully functional printer to use.

Refilling your printer ink cartridges is a quick and simple way to maximize the usability of the printers which you use. Instead of having to unnecessarily spend exorbitant amounts of money on buying new and expensive printer ink cartridges on a regular basis, you can follow some guided instructions and refill printer ink cartridges on your own, allowing you to use it over and over again. The only trick comes into play with the fact that printer ink cartridges can only be refilled a certain number of times before they stop working properly.

This means that you will always need to take care to count the number of times in which you actually refill a printer ink cartridge. If you expect to get the greatest amount of life out of your cartridges, you will want to always treat them very delicately. This will include remembering the number of times which you refill it. Refill your printer ink cartridge too often and you will damage the unit and waste ink. Some sources will recommend that you only refill a printer ink cartridge twice before disposing of it, while other people will tell you that you can successfully refill a printer ink cartridge up to 6 times before it needs to be disposed of. As long as you are always careful about what you are doing, you should be able to get a longer lifespan out of all of your cartridges.

Color Cartridges

1. To locate the filler holes of the printer ink cartridge you must remove the plastic cover. this cover must be removed before refilling by carefully prying it off with a thin metal blade such as a utility knife. Important: Make certain not to damage the sensors on the back of the cartridge.

2. Attach the needle to the syringe and fill with the correct color ink.

3. Insert the filling needle into the corresponding hole of the color to be refilled, (see diagram above) and push a far down into the cartridge. Note: You may a feel slight pressure because the cartridge contains a sponge.

4. Inject approximately 8 ml. of ink slowly or until the sponge is soaked. Important: The sponge inside is white. And in order to prevent overfilling the cartridge do not change the color of the sponge to the color you are filling. When the ink begins to surface where the needle is inserted, stop filling, the cartridge is full.

5. Rinse the syringe and needle with water and dry between each color refilling or store for further use.

6. The top can be held in place with adhesive tape after refilling.

Black Cartridges

1. Using an eyelet screw or a sharp object, enlarge the filling hole. (Do not remove the top).

2. Fill the syringe with ink, insert the filling needle into the filling hole and push as far down the black printer cartridge as it will go. Inject approximately 20 ml. of ink slowly or until the reservoir is full.

Prepare your work surface by spreading out the newspapers. Place your tools and supplies on top of the newspaper. Be sure to choose a work surface where you will have ample room. If you must work in a carpeted area, spread the newspapers over the carpet under the work surface, too.

Shake the black refill toner container several times. Unscrew the cap and pop open the aluminum safety seal using the screw driver. Screw on the funnel top that came with the refill toner.

Locate the rubber stopper on the Xerox toner cartridge. With the hopper cylinder portion of the printer ink cartridge facing up, the small rubber stopper can be found on one of the ends of the printer ink cartridge.

Pry the rubber stopper that covers the refill hole off of the cartridge by inserting the flat head screw between the lip of the stopper and the printer ink cartridge. Gently work the screwdriver around the stopper until it becomes loose. Put the stopper to the side.

Stand the cartridge on end with the refill hole facing up.

Insert the funnel on the refill Xerox toner container into the refill hole on the printer ink cartridge. Slowly empty the toner into the cartridge.

Insert the rubber stopper into the Xerox toner cartridge, making sure that it is securely in place.

Insert the Xerox toner cartridge back into the Xerox copier. The copier will automatically readjust the toner settings

Discard the newspapers carefully avoiding spilling any printer toner which may have spilled. Wash your hands immediately after working with toner powder.

Step 1) Put the printer ink cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.

Step 2) Look at the printer ink cartridge. This cartridge has two chambers. The Lower chamber is filled with a sponge. The Upper chamber is an empty ink reservoir.

Step 3) Put enough ink in the Lower chamber to saturate the sponge by injecting some ink through the ink exit hole on the bottom of the printer ink cartridge. Be sure that you do not push the sponge into the cartridge, or it will not make proper contact with the printhead when installed in the printer.

Step 4) Temporarily tape over the ink exit hole to keep the ink from dribbling out.

Step 5) Make a hole (by drilling or melting)into the Upper chamber. We suggest making the hole on the top of the printer ink cartridge.

Step 6) Inject ink into this new hole to fill the Upper chamber.

Step 7) Seal the new hole air tight using hot glue or black electrical tape. Do not use ordinary masking tape, duct tape, or scotch tape, since these will not make an air tight seal.

Step 8) Remove the temporary tape on the printer ink exit hole and insert in the printer.

You can either send used ink cartridges out to be refilled, or purchase a refill kit and do it yourself. A typical refill kit can be purchased either online or at an office supply store and includes ink bottles, syringes and detailed instructions. Make sure you purchase the correct ink for your cartridge type (based on the printer make and model).

Once you have the refill kit you will also need a roll of paper towels, clear Scotch tape and some disposable rubber or plastic gloves.

The refill process is as follows:

1. Read the instructions that came with the refill kit and make sure you understand them.

2. It is best to refill the printer ink cartridge when there is still a little printer ink left inside.

3. Put on the gloves and place several sheets of paper towel (folded) on a flat surface. Working over the folded paper towel, remove the printer ink cartridge from the printer.

4. Locate the fill holes on the top of the cartridge. The depressions can be felt by rubbing your finger across the label. Use a sharp pencil to pierce the refill holes in the top of the printer ink cartridge. Squeeze the cartridge to equalize the pressure.

5. Follow the refill kit instructions on which hole to insert each color OR push a toothpick into the holes to identify the ink colors.

6. Pour the ink into the cartridge slowly by inserting the long needle from the refill bottle into the refilling hole. Simply push the needle through the hole and press to the bottom of the cartridge towards the outlet hole. It is important to fill the cartridge slowly and avoid foaming or pushing air into the chamber.

7. Take care not to overfill the cartridge – different printers hold different amounts of ink. See the instructions with your refill kit for how much ink your cartridges can hold. Stop quickly as soon as you see a bit of ink oozing out of the hole. Without letting go of the bottle, slowly release the air, sucking a little ink back out of the ink cartridge, before you remove the needle completely.

8. Carefully daub the cartridge contacts on the paper towel. You should see a splotch of the ink leaking out onto the paper towel.

9. Cover the refill hole with a small piece of clear scotch tape. (This works better than the seal dots included in the kit.) Make sure that no ink is leaking out of the top holes. (That’s where the clear tape comes in handy.) Be careful not to cross contaminate the colors.

10. Any unused printer ink should be put back in the bottle. Clean the syringe with water and dry it properly before filling with another ink color or for future use. If you have several syringes you can label each with a different color so that the same syringe is always used for the same color.

11. When the cartridge has been refilled, check it to make sure it is clean and will not leak into the printer. It is a good idea to blot the print head on the paper towels to make sure the color is not bleeding.

12. Once you place the cartridge back in the printer, print something right away to get the ink flowing. Print a photo with different colors or a test page to make sure every color works. Then run the cleaning cycle 1 to 3 times. If there are any gaps in the printing run the cleaning cycle again, and try removing the Scotch tape from the refill holes.

13. Some printers (like Epson) have cartridges with an indicator chip that tracks how often the cartridge is used and lets the computer know when it may be low or empty. As long as you reset the chip, refilling the cartridge with ink from a refill kit will not be a problem. A resetting tool can be used to reset the memory on the chip.
