A 2004 Harris Interactive poll found that 55.6 percent of American consumers throw out their empty printer cartridges rather than returning or recycling them so they can be refilled and reused!

Those 270 million cartridges add more than 40 million pounds of unnecessary waste to the trash stream every year. The cartridges take more than 1,000 years to decompose.

Around 1990, rising retail prices motivated companies to start cleaning, refitting and refilling empty cartridges to be sold as a less expensive remanufactured product. A 2004 study by the Rochester Institute of Technology found remanufactured printer cartridges provide the same quality and page output as new cartridges.

Goals:

To reduce pollution by keeping cartridges out of the trash stream

To save energy by remanufacturing cartridges

To raise money to support UConn-SWCS activities

Project Status:

On February 7, 2005 the UConn Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) initiated a program to collect and recycle student owned printer cartridges. Flyers were distributed to advertise the location of drop-off bins for cartridge collection in the following locations:

McMahon Hall Lounge

Branford Hall Lounge

Alsop B Lounge

Room 225 Beach Hall

The UConn-SWCS partnered with the Missouri based eCycle Group to implement the recycling program. The eCycle Group pays the UConn-SWCS between $0.50 to $14 per cartridge depending on brand and type. Funds raised by the recycling program will go to support UConn-SWCS activities like river clean-ups, maintenance of the UConn forest trails and student outreach events.

The UConn-SWCS is encouraging students to recycle used printer cartridges and purchase remanufactured cartridges which are available at most retailers that carry printer cartridges.

The UConn-SWCS is a student club open to both undergraduate and graduate students. The chapter began in 1979 and continues to draw much interest today. The UConn-SWCS promotes the wise use of soil, water and related natural resources in Connecticut through advocacy, professional development, and public education. The UConn-SWCS is a part of an international network of society chapters which foster the science and art of soil, water, and related natural resource management to achieve sustainability.

MSE Broadens Its Compatible Toner Cartridges Line
Micro Solutions Enterprises introduces a number of new compatible printer cartridges, including those for the HP 1300 Series, HP 9000, HP/TROY 4014, 4015, and 4515 series, MICR toner, HP CP2025 and CM2320, and Xerox Phaser 3200 MFP.

Micro Solutions Enterprises (MSE) is an ISO 9001/ISO14001-certified company that uses 28 patented and patent-pending technologies as it manufactures a line of compatible toner cartridges, MICR toner cartridges, and print head based inkjets. MSE’s manufacturing capacity exceeds 300,000 toners and 200,000 inkjet cartridges per month. MSE offers solutions for outsourcing, private labeling, private packaging, and blind drop shipping.

MSE Broadens Its Compatible Toner Cartridges Line
A number of new compatible printer cartridges have been added to the MSE line in recent months. Among the most notable are compatible cartridges for the HP 1300 Series, HP 9000, HP/TROY 4014, 4015, and 4515 series, MICR toner, HP CP2025 and CM2320, and Xerox Phaser 3200 MFP.

HP 1300 Jumbo
The MSE Jumbo cartridge is compatible with the HP 1300 Series and has a yield of 8,000 pages based on ISO 19752 testing methodologies, according to Micro Solutions.”This cartridge offers 100 percent more yield than HP’s high-yield version,” says MSE marketing manager Craig Faczan. “This model is benchmarked against OEM specifications and is verified on all machines.

HP 9000 Jumbo
MSE’s HP 9000-compatible Jumbo toner cartridge has a 40,000-page yield, according to its maker.”With our proprietary component combinations and patented technologies,” explains Faczan, “we are able to produce this Jumbo cartridge that yields 33 percent more than the highest-yielding OEM product.”

HP/TROY 4014, 4015, and 4515 Series MICR
MSE’s MICR toner cartridges now have compatible versions for HP/TROY 4014, 4015, and 4515 Series printers.”The HP/TROY 4014, 4015, and 4515 network-ready printers have print speeds up to 62 pages per minute,” Faczan explains. “Our MICR cartridges are stringently tested to perform at these speeds.”

According to Faczan, the new cartridge models meet OEM yields of 10,000 and 24,000 pages respectively (based upon 5 percent coverage) and are verified to meet all ABA and ANSI standards of the accredited X9 committee for print quality and readability.”Additionally, these 2 HP MICR compatibles, as well as other MSE MICR compatibles,” he says, “are guaranteed to work in the associated HP and TROY models.”

HP CP2025 and CM2320 Cartridges
MSE’s release of HP CP2025- and CM2320-compatible cartridges aims to bring colorful printing to SMBs at a lower cost.Faczan says the new cartridges in this line have undergone ISO 19798 page yield testing to “ensure matching OEM yield.” This testing, he says, requires a minimum of 12 cartridges (three of each color) to be tested in three separate printers. “In addition,” Faczan says, “we have done comprehensive testing on image density and color matching to meet our graphics grade quality on all products.”

Xerox Phaser 3200MFP Compatibles
MSE’s new Xerox Phaser 3200 MFP-compatible cartridges yield 3,000 pages based on ISO 19752 testing methodologies, according to Faczan. He says the machine has a monthly duty cycle of 10,000 pages and prints up to 24 pages per minute. “MSE’s compatible cartridge has the reliability to hold up to this performance as well as the machine’s 1200 x 1200 dpi capabilities,” he adds.

The videos are for corporations, consumers and the media.
January , 2010 — A Kansas City company with a green line of remanufactured printer ink and toner cartridges called grenk, produced by InkCycle, released its first educational Web video in a series of environmental videos to come about recycling e-waste, eliminating over-consumption and lessening individual and corporate carbon footprints. The videos are for corporations, consumers and the media.

Roderick grew up spending his summers raising crops on what he affectionately references as the Illinois dirt farm his grandparents owned, says he was taught the value of environmentalism at this very young age taking care of the family farm.

Prior to joining a large multinational corporation in the late 1980s that provided remanufactured ink cartridges, Roderick was frustrated to discover that corporate consumers had little interest not only in his company’s products, but in recycled or remanufactured products in general. In recent years, however, growing public awareness and support for environmental activism has prompted the corporate world to ramp up its efforts in support of green initiatives.

This has been a welcome development for Roderick, both professionally and personally. “We are seeing a groundswell of people that are much more engaged in green aspects to help their business, to help promote them better, to help them do the right thing,” said Roderick. As a result, he says, “I was able to go back to my roots and say, now I can make a living, earn an income in recycling, an area that I’m passionate about. I did not think of it as environmentalism; I thought of it as just being a good steward for the environment.”

Grenk is a new line of remanufactured ink and toner cartridges by InkCycle. As the first zero landfill-waste line of products in the aftermarket print cartridge industry, grenk is designed to leave the smallest environmental footprint possible.
